Catherine Day, who has formed a “Transition Town” group in Las Cruces, will discuss how its members are taking action locally on climate change. The towns are part of a national Transition Movement that seeks to build community resilience in the face of such challenges as peak oil, climate change and the economic crisis. Transition Initiatives differ from other "environmental" groups in that they work to stave off converging global crises in their own home towns through tactics that include citizen-led education and actions. Day, an NMSU doctoral student, recently attended an international conference on Transition Town initiatives. Her talk will be held Tuesday, Aug. 12 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, Roadrunner Room in Las Cruces. The event is free and open to the public.
